When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade and, when it snows? Well you run in it, of course! And run we did this past week. In addition to our group runs, kids and adult programs, this past week the Russell Run Club organized their first snowshoe event, the DION Showshoe Squall. As predicted, it was amazing!

Snowshoe Squall is a great success!
The Russell Run Club is rarely scared off by a new challenge. Instead, they rise to meet it. This weekend's DION Snowshoe Squall was the latest in firsts for the club, and with the support of many great organizations, it was a huge success. Don't believe us? Just ask series organizer Derrick Spafford who said:
"Congrats again to you and your club. That was an awesome event you put on. You nailed every aspect. Thanks so much! I heard so many positive comments and was just so great for the sport"
"And, what an amazing club you’ve built. So impressive. I was glad I got to meet them. The way that it went this year will help build it that much more for next year. Can’t wait!!"
While there was a concern that we might not have snow, Mother Nature over-delivered. Registration exploded in response to the great conditions and runners came from Quebec, Ontario and New York to take on the 5km and 10km distances on offer.
We couldn't have asked for a better day thanks to the incredible sponsors, participants and volunteers.

Next Up: Chase the Sun
With cleanup from the Snowshoe Squall barely finished, the club is moving on to plan yet another first: an ultra-distance event!

The Chase the Sun event will take place on a 400m track allowing participants to safely complete as many laps as they can between sunrise and sunset. With the event scheduled for June 14, 2025, those eager to challenge themselves will have 15 hours and 38 minutes to see what they are made of. Others may choose to do something shorter. Like all of our events, there will be something for everyone.
Yes, June seems like a long way off but before we know it, spring will be here and we want to make sure you have all the time you need to train for this unique event.
Mark June 14, 205 in your calendars and watch for registration to open.
New York Central Fitness Trail parkrun
While the day warmed up, Saturday morning was still VERY chilly resulting in yet another cancelled parkrun. We're confident that these temperatures can't last forever so we are certainly hoping to see a parkrun next Saturday. Watch the parkrun socials to get updates.
Parkrun is a free timed 5km run, walk or jog every Saturday at 9:00 AM. To register, go to https://www.parkrun.ca/register/. You only have to do it once. Remember to bring your barcode or take a screenshot of it on your phone.
