We've set up a club on Strava just for Russell Run Club members. https://www.strava.com/clubs/russellrunclub
What is Strava?
Strava is a platform that allows you to track your activities, share them with others, and see the activities of others that you 'follow' in the app. It's like a social media platform focused on your runs, bikes, walks, hikes, or whatever activity you choose to share.
How does it work?
You can use the mobile app to track your runs or any other type of activity. You can also choose to upload specific activities tracked on another device or app (Garmin, Kronos, Map My Run, etc.), or set your device/app to upload your activities automatically once they are complete. You can add photos and comments to your activities and see the details, photos and comments of the activities of those you follow. You can cheer each other on by giving 'Kudos'.
What is the Russell Run Club Strava Club?
Once you are a Strava member, you can choose to join clubs within the app. We've set up a club-specific to the Russell Run Club where you can see all of the activities of your fellow club members in one place. As we learn more about the club setting we will use it to post our group runs, event and maybe create some challenges.
How do I join?
Download the Strava app to your mobile device and create an account. Search for the Russell Run Club in the app or click the following link to request access to the club: https://www.strava.com/clubs/russellrunclub
If you have any challenges with getting signed up, email info@russellrunclub.ca or ask another club member. Quite a few have already joined!

What was the Russell Run Club Up To This Week?
Our members were so busy racing and training we had no pictures to share. However, we have a story from Dave Sadler about his experience at the CHEO Race for Kids:
This morning I ran in the CHEO Run for the Kids through Ottawa's Wesley Clover Parks. The weather was perfect and the single loop cross country course is a delight to run, with its hills and dips through trails in the woods, taking us around open fields, through some slippery muddy puddled spots, and then back to gravel for a finish with a big cheering crowd gathered. It's a big event, but well organized with everything from a petting zoo, clean facilities, easy access and parking, a mechanical (blow up, I think) bull to ride, breakfast, coffee, dogs,... everything for an excellent family (especially kids) friendly event.
Last year, this was one of the first events I participated in as I got back into running after a about 20 years away. My time then was 30:08 for the 5 km. It's not a flat easy course, so I was happy enough with that. With a year of running progress under my belt, I managed 24:38 today, five and a half minutes quicker, 13/383 in the adult category, so I'm happy again. This one stays on my annual list.
That's not the great story though... I'm a senior runner, so I'm no longer competitive among those in their primes. I find teens who seem "so young" are now giving me a run for my charity money. I've had to adjust to sometimes seeing even pre high school runners outrunning me, and that's okay because my goal now is to just stay in the game, keeping active, healthy, and somewhat spry.
While running, passing the runners who started out at paces they couldn't maintain, I passed a girl, no more than maybe 15, and then she mustered up a bit more willpower and passed me on the inside of the next turn. I commented, "That's the way to do it. If you let people pass you, you end up falling farther and farther behind." We passed each other again and again for the next few kilometers, passing others as we went along, aware of each other close by, and then I could hear her struggling at my heels as the finish came within sight. I looked over my shoulder and said, "Now's the time - if you have it in you." I didn't let up or give her an inch. She called up whatever was in her and passed me with huffing and puffing and some serious deternination.
That was really really cool - connecting across generations. I congratulated her with a "Way to go!", and we shared a fist bump. That made my day more than the run itself did. Being able to encourage someone to challenge themselves and gain more from the run, being a cross generational mentor, sharing in the spirit of the run - with someone almost from another world considering our different demographic backgrounds -- Now that's special.
Happy autumn running to you all. Now's the time - if you have it in you.
Thanks, David, for showing what we value as a club.

Berlin Marathon
Congratulations to Brent Smyth for completing the Berlin Marathon
Berlin marathon in the books (#17). One of the tougher ones (for me) for sure, legs, lower back and hip flexors all started seizing at about 28k.
My training partner and best friend Erik was strong throughout, he took care of me out there, found a massage station (on course ), slowed or stopped when I needed to and made sure I stuck to our #KFG mantra!
So grateful to have him along on this journey (5 of 7), (7 of 9), (17 of 19).
Can’t wait to see the official photos.
