Club News

The Russell Historical Society's Heritage Day

The Russell Run Club was invited to put together a small display at the Russell Historical Society's Heritage Day. We were among other sports such as curling, broomball, rowing and soccer.

We had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Darrel Menard talk about his experience as a coach, guide, and physician at the Para-Olympics. He told a story about how he guided a blind runner to a gold medal. He concluded that his prayers were answered—he got to go to the Olympics and win a medal, but just in a completely different way.

Darrel Menard sharing his stories as a coach, guide and physician at the Para Olympics

We discovered a little history of running in Russell with this small display shown below. It discusses William Booth, the Terry Fox Run and how the Henry J. Tweed conservation area got created.

After a tour of the exhibit, I (Michelle) had a great chat with Erin Gurski, chair of the event. After remarking about the history and artifacts of the sports on display, I realized that we are also recording the history of running in Russell—not so much through displays in museums but through posts on our social media and blogs on our website. If you scroll through the years you can see our history.

Russell Run Club supports the Terry Fox Run

It was a beautiful day for the Russell Run Club to participate in the Terry Fox Run. Club members and their families were out to celebrate one of Canada's heroes and raise money for Cancer Research.

The Club was represented at both sides of the trail

Our Team had over 12 participants on both sides of the trail. They raised $600.00 online. We had a few last minute registrations so that total is a bit higher.

What was the Russell Run Club Up To This Week?

Every week, we call out our members to share their runs, training, and races. We love to celebrate achievements of all sorts and be a sounding board when things go wrong.

To inspire and motivate you - this is what happened this week:

From upper left hand corner moving clockwise:

  • Tara combines work and training, finding a beautiful spot to run in Belleville

  • Melisande is getting post Long Run kisses from Kezia

  • Melanie at the Terry Fox Run. Her first 10km run post-injury

  • Beautiful sunset to wrap up Thursday Track Workout

MIchelle shares the emotional challenge of the injured runner having to set aside a goal for another day.

This day is here. Six weeks ago it couldn't come fast enough. The last 12 days I have been dreading it - mainly because of the emotions that it will stir.
This morning I should have been starting a 330 km journey carrying everything I needed on my back. Alone on the roads and trails. No computer, no social media, no podcasts, no people except for those I cross paths with. A return to feral life for a few more days.
Now today is another day of appointments, meetings, scheduling social media posts, emails and enjoying the comforts of life. I try to avoid looking at my watch and thinking of where I should have been or what I should have been doing this week only if I didn't trip, only if I didn't do that FKT attempt, only if....
Today is the day every injured runner does not look forward to. The day they should be celebrating the hard training over weeks and months. Now it's mourning over what didn't happen. But only for a bit. Each injury I've had is a blessing...I am just patiently waiting to see what this one brings.

Member Achievements

La Grande Vadrouille à Vaudreil- Dorion

If we create an award for the most active member of the club. These guys are going to have to fight for it. Maurice Bonneville and Paul Lalonde crushed it at La Grande Vadrouille à Vaudreil- Dorion. These guys snagged age group wins in the 15 km run.

Here is Paul's Race Report

Première position pour moi et Maurice Bonneville dans nos groupes d'âge respectif. L'Ontario va pas au Québec pour rien!!
